Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a serious crash yesterday where a pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck by a bus at Tumbi Umbi.

About 6.25pm on Friday 22, a passenger bus was being driven east along the bus lane on Wyong Road.

About 300 metres east of the intersection with Beckingham Road a group of between six and eight pedestrians ran from the southern side of Wyong Road between the heavy traffic.

An 18-year-old woman was struck by the bus which immediately stopped.

The 69-year-old male bus driver rendered first aid to the woman who had suffered serious head and spinal injuries but was conscious.

She was treated by Ambulance paramedics and airlifted to Westmead Hospital for treatment.

Police from Tuggerah Lakes Traffic & Highway patrol attended and commenced an investigation.

The bus driver was breath tested with a negative result. Heavy vehicle examiners confirmed the bus was in good working order.

Police have been told that the woman was part of a year 12 ‘fridge to fridge’ event.

The incident has renewed police warnings for students involved in end of year celebrations to be extremely cautious near roads and to celebrate safely and responsibly.

Inquiries into the crash continue.
