A man has been arrested in Charlestown after he allegedly set upon several people before running into traffic and attacking a driver stopped at a red light.

It happened on the corner of Charlestown Road and the Pacific Highway at about 3pm on Wednesday.

The video shows one courageous onlooker tackling the man when he started hitting the motorist.

A number of people nearby didn’t hesitate to help him move the man off the road and onto the footpath, where they detained him until police arrived 20 minutes later.

A witness has told Hit 106.9 she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.

“This guy has booted a car then started punching someone through their window of a car,” she said.

“And then another passenger of a car behind him got out and tackled him.”

He’s currently being questioned at Belmont Police Station.
