Teachers are seeing a rise in violent incidents at schools on the Central Coast and in the Hunter, with many themselves, having to duck for cover.

Latest figures show there were 264 incidents in the first six months of 2016 - the highest number ever for the first half of a school year since 2005.

Among the most serious cases - students charging at an assistant principal knocking her to the ground, a bottle being thrown at a teacher's face, and a student stabbed with a pencil.
