Melbourne's iconic Lygon Street remains partially closed nearly 12 hours after a suspicious fire ripped through several buildings, as police continue to investigate the cause.
Witnesses reported hearing explosions coming from a two-storey Carlton building which is under renovation at about 1am on Monday.
The blaze was so ferocious it caused a wall to collapse into a laneway, while a Japanese restaurant and reception centre were decimated by the blaze.
Firefighters brought it under control after just over an hour, while fifteen people were evacuated as a precaution and up at a Travelodge Motel until it was safe to return.
The street is still shut southbound down to Grattan Street and Grattan Street is closed heading east.
