Victoria's 'Big Build' projects is stepping up a notch over the Queens long weekend with maintenance across nine rail lines.

Critical maintenance is planned for the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Frankston lines, as well as the City Loop, which means all services on the Lilydale, Belgrave, Glen Waverley, Mernda and Hurstbridge lines will run direct to and from Flinders Street Station.

Transport Minister Jacinta Allan explained the long weekend is a good window of opportunity to get the job done.

"It provides a good period of time to get in, do a lot of work and get out again ahead of the normal working week"

Buses will replace trains on the Sunbury, Frankston, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines, while Trains on the Mernda, Hurstbridge, Lilydale, Belgrave, Glen Waverley and Alamein lines will skip the city loop because of viaduct works.

Georgia Main from the Department of Transport said if your heading into the city by rail over the weekend, it’s important to stay up to date on the changes occurring.

"Most train lines won't be running through the city loop. They'll go directly to or from Flinders Street as the track between Flinders and Southern Cross Stations is actually the busiest rail bridge in Melbourne"
