Victoria has recorded 847 new locally acquired Covid-19 cases and one death with health officials pleading residents to stay at home.

The new cases come from 57,342 tests returned yesterday and marks the highest number of cases the state has seen so far.

Health officials are warning residents to abide by health restrictions and stay in doors with a 5AM to 9PM curfew still in place for Melbourne.

The curfew remains in place despite coming into effect halfway through tonight's AFL Grand Final.

Victoria now has 7,611 active cases with a majority of these picked up from within the community.

The new numbers come after massive lockdown protests occurred throughout various cities including Melbourne with more planned for today.

An organised protest fizzled out yesterday with 31 protesters arrested at a shopping centre in the city's inner north in the afternoon.

Authorities are now bracing for a second wave of protests.
