An investigation is underway after a dangerous driving incident and subsequent car crash in Varsity Lakes last night.

Around 8.25pm a Gold Coast Dog Squad Unit saw a man driving a white Toyota Camry, travelling 130km east on Nerang Broadbeach Road at Carrara with the vehicle’s lights off and driver’s door open.

The vehicle was seen again driving dangerously at high speeds, swerving onto the median strip and grass verges of several arterial roads before continuing through a number of red lights.

Police tried to stop the driver along Oceanic Drive, Mermaid Waters but the driver failed to pull over.

A short pursuit was called off due to the man’s dangerous driving, but the vehicle was later located at the intersection of Christine Avenue and Lowood Court after crashing - investigations indicate the car flipped onto its roof.

The man had fled the scene when an officer arrived but was later located in the yard of a nearby property.

He was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
