Former Gosford MP Kathy Smith has died surrounded by loved ones after battling a recurrence of cancer for more than a year.
Labor leader Luke Foley said Ms Smith's condition deteriorated sharply last weekend.
"Kathy passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by loved ones," he said in a statement.
"My thoughts are with Peter, Kathy's children Richard and Janet and her grandchildren Georgia, Jimmy, Ali and Joshua."
Ms Smith was elected to the seat of Gosford in 2015 but stepped down in February after being advised she would require further treatment.
The seat was won by Liesl Tesch in the subsequent by- election.
Ms Smith was first diagnosed with cancer in 1996.
Mr Foley paid tribute to her political career, highlighting her fight for the provision of public radiotherapy treatment on the Central Coast.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said Ms Smith was a respected and well-liked member of parliament.
"On behalf of the NSW Liberals & Nationals Parliamentary team, our thoughts go out to her family, friends and Labor Party colleagues at this very difficult time," she said.
