SA Country Fire Service (CFS) has announced the Upper South East Fire Danger Season will start November 15, while the Lower South East will begin on November 22.

Acting Director Preparedness Operations, Brett Loughlin said these dates are normal for the Upper and Lower South East but is still urging people to be prepared.

"The South East has experienced a fairly normal winter period so it not as dry as other areas of the state," he said.

"However, with above average temperatures expected in the lead up to summer, it won't take long for fuels and soil to dry out creating the perfect scenario for a large fire to start."

CFS is urging people in the South East to start cleaning up their properties now.

"It's important that people start to reduce fuel loads around their homes by mowing or slashing fine fuels such as grasses. It's also a good time to clean out your gutters and remove flammable materials from under your veranda.

"By cleaning up your property early, and maintaining it throughout the fire danger season you'll be protecting your home from bushfires."

If you plan to burn excess vegetation, please be reminded to clear a four metre break around any piles, this includes grass and leaf litter. Have someone in attendance at all times with a sustainable water source in case the fire spreads.

"It is also important to continue monitoring the fire on the days following the burn to ensure it has not rekindled."

If you would like to conduct a burn once the fire season has begun, you need to contact your Local Council for a permit and to check Environmental Protection Authority restrictions - fires are not allowed on a Total Fire Ban Day.

A Vegetation Pile Burn Code of Practice is available on the CFS website (www.cfs.sa.gov.au).
