At 6pm tonight, 'unhappy hour' will begin across the city, with bars stopping service and turning on the lights to draw attention to the impact of lockout laws in Sydney.

This comes on the eve of the state election, which takes place on Saturday March 23.

More than 100 bars will be taking part, with service stopping for 15 minutes from 6pm.

"There's been quite a bit of discussion around Sydney's nightlife, and it's an opportunity for Sydney venues to be active and talk to their customers about the state of the nighttime economy," Chair of the Night Time Industries Association Michael Rodriguez said.

"So it's a brief pause of service for a few minutes, and someone might get up and talk.

"There is an environment where a noise complaint could shut down venues with a single call to one of seven government departments."
