Tributes have been pouring in online, after Mogo Zoo’s beloved silverback gorilla died suddenly over the weekend.

The zoo posted the devastating news on social media on Sunday.

“It was such an honour to share these five years with Kibabu.. his integrity as a leader and father.. and just to be in his presence was always a very powerful experience,” the post read.

“All at Mogo are truly devastated at this time with his passing.”

The Facebook post has attracted hundreds of comments and shares from people all around the world.

“So sorry to read this. My thoughts are with you all at this sad time! Such a sad loss for beautiful little Mogo and all you awesome Zoo Keepers! Sending lots of love your way, especially to his extended little fur family! We had the pleasure of meeting him on a visit there two years ago. Still have my pics and memories!” – Gina

“So very sorry Sally, Lou and all at Mogo Zoo – he was magnificent and I loved going to visit him and his family. RIP Kibabu.” – Sandie

“Oh so sorry to hear! RIP beautiful boy. Condolences to all who loved and cared for Kibabu. I am so glad that I visited Mogo Zoo last year and photographed him and his family.” – Deb

“I am deeply saddened by the news. First came to know Kibabu at Taronga. Was delighted to hear he was coming to Mogo. He has been my face on my Facebook page several times and have always visited the exhibit every time I visit.” - Alan

Many of those who had the pleasure of working with Kibabu, also expressed their sadness online..

“I am in tears to hear this sad news. I had the privilege of working with him at Taronga and he started my career as a gorilla keeper. He truly was a magnificent gentle giant, a wonderful father and an amazing leader to his family. RIP Kibabu, you will forever be in my heart.” – Lisa

“He was one of a kind and I felt so lucky to have worked with him. Thanks Sal. Thoughts are with Kriba, Kipenzi, Sal, Lou, Lisa and the gorilla team at Mogo and all who worked with him, admired him and loved him from around the globe.” – Sophie
