A story that's captured the hearts of our community and now the rest of the country too.

Toyah Cordingley- a woman who had the world at her feet and a heart just as big will be honoured at the new federally funded Paws and Claws Animal Shelter in Port Douglas.

Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch announcing the Coalition Government would invest $500,000 into the construction of the new building.

It's set to have a new dedicated area called the "Toyah Puppy Nursery."

“I like everyone in our community was shocked and horrified at what happened to this beautiful young woman who had the world at her feet,” Mr Entsch said.

“I have been working extremely closely with Paws and Claws to secure funding for their new shelter after the association secured a property within the Craiglie business estate.

“I had absolutely no hesitation in supporting the association’s proposal for a lasting memorial to Miss Cordingley at their new home.” Mr Entsch said.

It's been 6 months since Toyah's body was found by her father at Wangetti Beach after walking her dog around 2pm on the 21st of October 2018.

Her killer has not been found.
