The Thunderstorm asthma forecast system has been turned on for 2018 in Victoria.

The monitoring allows the Department of Health and Human Services to inform people of high risk days, particularly those with asthma or hay fever to allow them to take preventative action.

Thunderstorm asthma occurs when the winds preceding a certain type of storm whip up grass pollen to high levels during spring.

It's the second year the technology has been in place after 9 people died in Victoria in 2016 following a severe thunderstorm asthma event that November.

Victorian deputy chief health officer Dr Angie Bone says the forecast will be available at the Vic Emergency website until December 31st.
