The Real Story of Mildred Ratched From Netflix’s Ratched

Netflix's Ratched envisions the early days of infamous character Mildred Ratched, but the series isn't based on fiction.

Each one of Ryan Murphy's creations is filled with symbolism, an aesthetic colour palette, and a bizarre storyline, his latest creation, Ratched, is no different.

The eight-part series is a prequel to the 1975 film and the 1962 book, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, and follows the infamous character nurse Mildred Ratched.

Ratched introduces us to Mildred Ratched, before her inhumane crimes in the famous book and film, and it explores how she went from a nurse wanting the best for her patients, to one of the most terrifying characters in horror.

Mildred Ratched isn't fictional, Ken Kesey, author of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, actually based the character on someone he knew. The events that you see in Ratched aren't completely fictional.
