The internet has a strange, yet understandable obsession with blackheads.

People want to remove these skin nasties by any means necessary but unfortunately, the most effective methods are extremely painful.

Recently the internet discovered that although those infamous charcoal peel-off face masks were great at clearing pores, they were a real b&^$% to take off, so a few Reddit users have found a new way to unclog those blackheads without hurting your skin.

Members of the SkincareAddiction community have discovered a new way to clean their skin which they call "gritting"

Grits are supposedly the little balls of gunk you're left with when the debris inside your pores is cleaned out.

These balls could contain anything from oil to dead skin and because of this, they have a very gritty texture which is where the name of this new cleansing routine comes from.

The forum is full of facts and extra gritting tips with users also sharing photos of the gunk they've been able to extract from their pores.

So how is it done?

You start with an oil cleanser, massage that into your skin and top it off with a clay mask.

When the clay mask is washed off, you use your oil cleanser a second time but this time, you must massage your face vigorously.

This rough massage is where the blackheads are supposed to be released without you having to painfully squeeze them out.

The members of the SkincareAddiction Reddit community all swear by this method to clean their skin but, experts aren't so convinced that gritting effectively clears your pores.

Dermatologist Elizabeth Tanzi, MD explained to Refinery29 that rigorous physical exfoliation can indeed clog pores, as can a good clay mask, but the method may not be for everybody.

“Clay is known to have the ability to grab the debris and then lift it out of pores.

"But people with sensitive skin should be very careful with this type of treatment since the combination of clay (which can be drying) and rigorous exfoliation could be way too irritating."

Would you give this a try?
