A mother has been arrested after attacking a teacher with a pair of scissors at a primary school in Byron Bay on Tuesday morning.

The stabbing allegedly took place around 7.20am at Byron Bay Public School on Kingsley Street, Byron Bay.

The woman was arrested at 11am and is being interviewed by police.

Police will allege that a 28-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman were speaking at the location before she approached him holding "what is believed to be a pair of scissors".

The man, who police have confirmed is a teacher at the school, sustained cuts to his face and arm.

He has been treated at the scene, before being taken to Byron Central Hospital for further treatment.

He has since been transferred to Tweet Hospital for surgery.
