A Sydney teenager has been deported and fined after he joked he had a bomb on a New Zealand flight.

Meke Fifita, 19, typed “I have a bomb” into an in-flight messaging app as his Sydney-bound plane was taxiing to the runway at Auckland International Airport.

The plane returned to the gate and the man was arrested.

He typed "I have a bomb" because he "thought it was funny", the court heard.

His lawyer told the court he was remorseful and very distressed.  A reparation sum of $3000 was paid by Fifita's father in Sydney.
