As travel bans lift for Aussies stranded in India, the first in a number of repatriation flights have taken off. 

The first aeroplane landed Friday, flying in around 200 Australians to the Northern Territories Howard Springs quarantine facility.

It's estimated about thirty of the 200 returned travellers will have Covid-19.

Defence Minister, Peter Dutton told Nine a number of "quarantine measures have been put in place".

"We can pull out people from India and do it safely" he said.

Chief Minister of the Northern Territory Michael Gunner has told nine the NT quarantine facility is well prepared to ensure "Territorians and Australians are safe"

'We are looking to be a place of safe harbour, a refuge for those Aussies and we can do that," he said.

The NT government plan to ramp up operations at the facility taking in up to 2000 repatriated Australians per fortnight in June.
