Growing up, we all watched Spongebob Squarepants to fill in the time we were supposed to be doing homework in the afternoons…

We thought we had the Spongebob world pretty well worked out, but we just learned something that might mean we’re wrong:

Squidward is not a squid. 


Unfortunately, although we were led to believe this revelation was much bigger than it really is, Squidward is actually an octopus. 

We’re sure you’re thinking, aren’t they the same thing?!

Well, no, not really. 

An octopus uses it’s eight sucker-lined arms to capture its prey and to move along the floor of the ocean. 

A squid has eight sucker-lined arms, and two of them have specialised tentacles that are used to reach out and ensnare prey. 

Slight difference, we know, but that hasn’t stopped people from losing their minds over it…
