The South Gippsland Shire Council has presented their Australia Day awards to some local residents.

The main award, Citizen of the Year, was presented to Leatha Peters for her community work in Mirboo North. Since moving to the area in 1960, Ms Peters has been heavily involved with Mirboo North Kindergarten, Primary School Parents Club, Mirboo North Fire Brigade, Hospital Auxiliary, Swimming Club, Football Club and the Mirboo North Singers. Her work with the Christmas Sleigh raffle and fundraising for Mirboo North pool also contributed to her receiving the prestigious award.

Pete Clarkson was awarded South Gippsland’s Young Citizen of the Year for 2019, recognised for creating an inclusive environment for LGBTI students at Leongatha Secondary College. He is the school's first openly transgender student.

Meanwhile, Eamonn Toomey received honours for Youth Contributor of the Year for his work with the local Scouts and fundraising activities.
