People should stay inside and off the roads if possible as a severe thunderstorm is due to hit Melbourne this afternoon. 

The Bureau of Metereology reports heavy winds, rain and possible hail are due to hit Melbourne at around 4pm, following a day of high winds.

Today already, winds have lashed Victoira, hitting a peak of 122km/hr at Port Philip Bay.

"Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Kyneton, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Wonthaggi and Bacchus Marsh," BOM said in a statement. 

Speed limits on the Westgate Bridge have been cut to 60km/hr to keep drivers safe.

There’s also a road weather alert for Melbourne, with gusty winds, showers and possible small hail making driving conditions dangerous drivng Tuesday afternoon and early evening. 

The State Emergency Service advises that people should: 
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. 
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. 
* Keep clear of fallen power lines. 
* Stay indoors if possible. 
* Avoid using the phone during the storm. 
* If you are outside, avoid sheltering under trees 
* Listen to the radio for storm updates 
* Switch off your electrical appliances
