Netflix's latest original series, 13 Reasons Why, has received major backlash across the world.

Schools have sent letters to parents, warning them of the sensitive themes depicted in the show.

New Zealand has also created a new film classification specifically for the show, banning teenagers from watching without adult supervision.

Selena Gomez is a producer on the show and revealed on her Instagram that this project was in the works for years.

She has now spoken out about the worldwide backlash and shared her thoughts on the bans.

Whilst speaking to the Associated Press, the singer and actress explained that she understood that this sort of reaction was inevitable.

"We stayed very true to the book and that's initially what [author] Jay Asher created was a beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful story and I think that's what we wanted to do.

"We wanted to do it justice and, yeah, [the backlash is] gonna come no matter what.

"It's not an easy subject to talk about, but I'm very fortunate with how it's doing."

She also told E! Online that the show will hopefully allow teenagers to talk about important issues that they are faced with every day.

"I believed in the project for so long and I understood what the message was.

"I just wanted it to come across in a way that kids would be frightened, but confused—in a way that they would talk about it because it's something that's happening all the time.

"So, I'm overwhelmed that's it's doing as well as it's doing."

Netflix is currently in talks with producers about bringing a second season of 13 Reasons Why to our screens.
