Controversial plans to search for gas and oil off Newcastle's coastline will become reality this weekend.
Asset Energy has confirmed seismic testing will start on Sunday April 15, pending weather.
The survey work is expected to take three to four days and will be undertaken at a location about 30km south-east of Newcastle.
Testing was due to start yesterday, however the survey vessel PMG Pride was stuck in North Queensland because of Cyclone Iris.
The ship is currently off the coast of Brisbane heading south.
Environmental groups have raised serious concerns about the impact of seismic testing on marine life.
