As this is the ~future~ and physical copies of things just won’t do, South Australian Police and Road Safety Minister Chris Picton has today revealed that SA will be bypassing NSW as the first state to roll out digital licences.
Minister Picton revealed in a statement:
“I’m delighted South Australians will be the first in the country to benefit from a statewide roll-out of this leading technology – which will not only streamline licensing services but offer vastly heightened security when it comes to verifying licences.”
So how will it work?
In a staged release starting from OCTOBER, digital learners, provisional, full or heavy vehicle licences will be made available to motorists through the mySA GOV app. When you need to present your licence to authorities or at pubs and clubs, will need to display on your licence smartphone and have it scanned.
What other licences and passes are available on the app?
Proof of Age CardsBoat Licences
Land Agent and Sales Representative Registrations (available now)
Digital Occupational Licences for builders, plumbers, gas fitters, electricians and security and investigations agents (released in the second half of 2017)
How do we use them?
You can access your digital licence or pass after creating a four-digit PIN or fingerprint identification through your mySA GOV account or
Yeah, but is it safe?
It seems so! The new licenses come equipped with encrypted storage, unique one-time use barcodes and data can only be accessed through private and secure web-based communication channels.
To differentiate a real licence to a sneaky screenshot on your phone, "a “shake-to-animate” feature has been added to the app, which will animate the screen and display a “tick” when your phone is shaken."
