Romance scammers taking money from innocent Australians is on the incline according to ACCC’s Deputy Chair, Delia Rickard.

“We had about $25 million reported lost just to the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) alone for romance scams last year,” Delia told Hughesy and Kate on Thursday.

“With data combined from the ACCC and ACORN (Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network) and a number of others we will find about, at least half a billion dollars reported lost,”

Kate’s alter-ego, Barb has spoken to a number of romance scammers over the years. These scammers usually provide details to international money transfer companies like MoneyGram or RIA, however, recently Barb’s scammer provided details to an Australian NAB account.

ACCC’s Delia Rickard explains in the audio below how these scammers are using Australian bank accounts to obtain the money.
