Some Sydney roads will be closed this weekend as the city hosts the ASEAN summit.

The city centre will be a heavy-duty fortress, with anti-terror police and covert officers, with strategic road closures to ensure the safety of foreign leaders attending the summit.

According to the Daily Telegraph, police will also be granted special powers to stop and search anyone, tow suspicious cars and ban drones.

Bag scans will also be in place, and police will also be able to move people along.

“You will see an increased number of police officers in and around our city and particular locations within Sydney’s CBD and other parts of the city,” Assistant Commissioner and Commander of Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Michael Willing said.

“Those powers will help us manage the flow of crowds to ensure those dignitaries are moved about our city in the safest manner possible and also to control some air space.”

It will be an offence to fly a drone within the CBD, Ultimo and Woolloomooloo over the weekend, and drivers will be towed if they park in a special event clearway section.

The affected area includes from Mrs Macquarie's Chair (Harbour) into Woolloomooloo, south to Goulburn Street (Surry Hills), west to Harris Street (Ultimo) and north to Barangaroo.
