A volunteer RFS firefighter is accused of deliberately lighting fires in Lake Macquarie.

It's claimed the 17 year old was caught red-handed by police starting a fire in bushland on Archery Rd at Wakefield last Friday, during a surveillance operation.

He was later pulled over by police on Rose Ave, Glendale and charged with three counts of light fire and be reckless to its spread.

The boy is also accused of sparking fires at Weir Road, Teralba on Thursday 22 November and at Current Avenue, Teralba on Saturday 8 December.

He's been granted strict conditional bail to appear at a children’s court on Monday 4 February.

Police are also reminding people that they could face penalties of up to 25 years in jail if found responsible for the lighting of bushfires – accidental or otherwise.
