Reusable Coffee Cup Program Coming To The Inner West

A reusable coffee cup initiative is being rolled out in Sydney's inner west, with the project to hopefully reduce the amount of waste from disposable cups in the area.

The pilot program will reduce the number of cups by rolling out reusable cups in the Inner West Council are, which includes suburbs such as Balmain, Ashfield, Newtown, Dulwich Hill and Marrickville.

It will start off in one area, which could include could be Balmain or Rozelle.

This would see cafes on the main streets have reusable cups, which customers can return to any of the participating cafes.

“The great thing about the inner west is there’s lots of cafe and small-business owners who are also inner-west residents, and who are open to new ideas and more environmentally friendly ways of doing business,” Mayor Darcy Byrne said, reports Broadsheet. 

While this is an expensive project, it is still estimated to be cheaper than the current coffee cup landfill.

While there is then an onus on the customer to return their cup, the mayor isn't concerned.

Since no one wants to carry around a dirty coffee cup and wash it up at home, the prospect of handing it in to a participating cafe seems like minimal effort.
