This week Townsville City Council approved a development application for a new funeral parlour.

The business will be located in Railway Estate and will include a funeral home and chapel but not a crematorium.

Deputy Mayor and Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Les Walker says it won't be a brand new building.

“The proposed development will refurbish an existing building on Railway Avenue in Railway Estate to establish the new funeral parlour,” Cr Walker said.

“The majority of the works from this development application relate to refitting the building internally.

“The proposal includes 26 new car spaces in a parcel of vacant land next to the building.”

Cr Walker said the proponents of the development scrapped its application for a crematorium.

“Local residents can be assured that no crematorium will be built on this location from this Council approval,” Cr Walker said.
