An inner-west Melbourne council is pushing for a contentious change to Victoria's speed limit.

Maribyrnong Council wants the current 50kmh limit reduced to 40kmh in built-up areas, which applies to areas where houses or buildings are next to the road or there are street lights up to 100 metres apart.

Mayor Catherine Cumming will flag the proposed change at a Municipal Association state council meeting on Friday.

She told the Herald Sun councillors believe a reduction would help avoid accidents.
