As Sydney swelters through another very hot day, experts have warned that there is a lot of air pollution due to the heat.

According to Dr Richard Broome from NSW Health, the poor air quality presents an extra risk to those with respiratory conditions.

"With the high ozone, it's important particularly if you have asthma you have a respiratory condition, to try to avoid being outside this afternoon, and make sure that you're following your asthma action plan if you have one and that you're carrying your reliever puffer," Broome said.

If you spot a friend or colleague struggling with the poor air quality, Dr Broome has some tips for assisting in case you need to give asthma first aid.

"Sit them upright so that they can breathe well, give them four puffs of their blue reliever puffer, and then wait for a minute and see if there's any improvement.

"If there isn't, you can give them another four puffs. And if there's no improvement after that, then you should probably call an ambulance."

Jacob Cronje from Weathezone told the Hit Newsroom that the west will suffer the worst when it comes to poor air quality.

"There is a forecast out for poor air quality in Sydney due to ozone pollution at ground level," he said.

"Usually ozone is pretty great when it's in the stratosphere and high above us, but at surface it's colourless and it's a secondary pollutant.

"Outdoor activities in the coming days should be definitely limited."
