Police have broken a car in Melbourne's south east to rescue a toddler locked in car.

The 18-month-old girl was locked in a vehicle on Dunns Road, Mornington about 1.30pm. It's believed the child was only locked in the car for a short time. 

Today is expected to hit 35C today, meaning heat inside a car could each 65C. 

Victoria is experiencing its hottest start to summer in almost a quarter of a century, as authorities maintain health alerts for parts of the state.

Melbourne is due to reach 38C on Friday while some centres in the state's northwest could surpass 40C according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
