Police are stepping up their hunt for a robber who held up a Cessnock newsagency back in April.

The man used a knife to threaten the 27 year old worker at the shop on Wollombi Road on April 1, before taking off with cash.

Detectives have released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak with.

He's described as wearing a balaclava, a hooded light grey jacket with a dark stripe down the arms, black gloves, dark-coloured long pants and dark shoes with white socks.

They've also released CCTV images of a silver Mitsubishi Mirage which may have been used as a getaway car.

It has yellow and black number plates, standard hub caps and damage to the left rear wheel arch.
