Police say they are “quite confident” the man accused of raping and murdering woman who was found in a Carlton North park is not connected to a sexual assault in Parkville in March.

Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper, Officer In Charge, Homicide Squad said a 19-year-old Broadmeadows man handed himself in to police last night after photos of the suspect in the CBD were circulated.

Police credited the involvement of the media and public for the matter’s quick resolution

The man was arrested and has been charged with one count of rape and one count of murder

The woman’s body was found at 3am by a passer-by at a sports field between Royal Parade and Princes park in Carlton North.

The suspect bore a similar likeness to the sketch of a man suspected of violently assaulting a woman in Parkville in March. But Police say they are satisfied the two matters are not connected.

Police say they are currently working with the victim’s family but her identity hasn’t been made public.

The teenager will appear in court later today.

Members of the public who may know something or have footage of the area are urged to contact the police.
