An investigation is underway into an unprovoked assault incident that occurred at Cairns North early on Sunday morning.

At around 1.30am, a 30-year-old Mareeba woman had crossed the Lily Creek footbridge which links Charles Street, and walked along a footpath toward Grove Street through John Eagan Park. Upon approaching Grove Street, she was set upon by a group of four or five females who were not known to her.

The woman was initially struck to the back of the head and fell to the ground before being kick and punched to the head and body and subsequently losing consciousness.

The victim sustained facial lacerations, bruising and swelling as a result of the incident and afterward attended Cairns hospital to seek treatment.

The offenders are believed to be a group of young women possibly of Torres Strait Islander background. At the time of the incident the victim heard a male voice yelling at the group to leave the victim alone.
