Spare a thought for those in the Hunter who'll have their power switched off during this week's heatwave.

Ausgrid has scheduled maintenance work in a number of neighbourhoods today, tomorrow and Friday, affecting hundreds of customers.

The utility says planned outages are usually only postponed once the mercury hits 40 degrees.

"We review all the jobs on the network which require power to be interrupted to any customers. But in places where temperatures are forecast to 40 degrees, that work is usually cancelled," spokesperson Jonathon Hall said.

"In some cases it will still proceed where customers agree or request for that work to still go ahead," he said.

It means some customers will be without power if the temperature in their suburb is only in the high-30's.

"Where work is proceeding, we are working to ensure the disruption for customers is kept to a minimum in the heat."
