Empty shelves in the pet food aisle are starting to cause a bit of concern for shoppers, with supermarkets running out of stock in key brands.

Woolworths and Coles have been the main stores affected, with manufacturer Mars Petcare refusing to supply supermarkets because of price rises.

Mars owns some of the more recognisable brands including Pedigree, Whiskas, Royal Canine, Dine, My Dog and Optimum.

It is expected that a deal will be settled soon.

"An availability issue with our supplier resulted in a number of pet food products being out of stock over the past week," Coles said.

"The good news is that the majority of products are now back on shelves in most stores, and we expect all stores to be fully stocked in the coming days."
