New lighting has started being installed in Palmer Street as a project to refurbish the popular dining strip kicks off.

The project includes improvements to lighting along the median strip, the lighthouse being lit up, new entry statement signage and lighting the palm trees at the entrance.

The upgrades are being delivered to Palmer Street by Townsville City Council in collaboration with local businesses in the area.

Townsville Deputy Mayor Les Walker said Council is committed to projects that will support local businesses and activate the CBD.

“Palmer Street is such an important part of the CBD and Council has been working with the businesses in the area to determine how we can attract more residents and visitors to the area,” Cr Walker said.

“New lighting has been top of the list and it’s fantastic that this project is off the ground with the first installations beginning this week.”

Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said new lighting and the planting of trees is a good follow up to improvements made to Palmer Street last year.

“Palmer Street received some upgrades in preparation for the Commonwealth Games last year and new lighting is the next step in attracting visitors and residents into the CBD,” Cr Greaney said.

“Not only will these lights improve the space and liven the atmosphere, they also play an important role for the safety of everyone visiting the area.”
