An elderly couple has suffered serious injuries after a fire broke out in their house at Sydenham early this morning.

The couple was rescued by an off-duty police officer who smashed his way into house on Unwins Bridge Road to get the pair out just before 6am.

They’ve been taken to RPA Hospital, the woman in a serious condition suffering smoke inhalation, the condition of the man isn’t known.

Newtown Local Area Commander, Suprintendant Gavin Wood has paid tribute to the actions of the police officer.

"The officer was on his way to work when he saw this home on fire"

"He has literally kicked in the front door of a burning building, entered and saved this couple"
