The state government has confirmed trains will run to the Newcastle Interchange at Wickham from late October or early November.

It's promised the Interchange will be ready in time for the thousands of fans heading to the Newcastle 500 Supercars race.

“With its distinctive, modern ‘space frame’ roof paying homage to the city’s steel manufacturing heritage, Newcastle Interchange will give locals and visitors an appropriate nod to the past as Newcastle steps onto the world stage," said Revitalising Newcastle program director Michael Cassel.

“Later this year, customers will be able to connect with trains, buses and taxis at the new interchange, the bus and ferry timetables will be overhauled in 2018, and light rail services are set to start in 2019.”

Between now and October the Newcastle Interchange building on Stewart Avenue will take shape and the internal fitout will take place.

The scope of the project also covers new train stabling and turnback facilities to the east of Hamilton Station, signalling work at Wickham, Hamilton and Broadmeadow, track work, a new pedestrian bridge and new staff facilities.

The $200 million project remains on budget.
