NZ police Commissioner Mike Bush has confirmed one person is in custody but it's possible more gunmen may be on the run following a mass shooting in Christchurch.

“The multiple fatalities are as far as we know as two locations, a mosque at Deans ave and another at Linwood ave. Again we are unsure if there are any other locations that are under threat.”

He said they were in the process of mobilising any national police resourse to keep people safe.

It's unclear how many people have been killed, with estimated between nine and thirty people, while more than sixty people are estimated to have been shot. The gunman dressed in a military jacket and live-streamed the shooting from a GoPro via Facebook.

“I want to ask anyone who was thinking of going to a mosque, not to go, to close their doors and not go out until you hear anything from us.”

Prime Minister Jacinda Adren has also spoken out against an "unprecedented act of violence" calling it one of New Zealand's "darkest days".

‘They are us. The person who has perpetuated this violence against them is not.

There is no place in New Zealand for such extreme and unprecedented violent such as this.
