A mother has died but her two children escaped serious injury in a collision on the Sturt Highway in South Australia's Riverland region.

The 45-year-old woman died when her car collided with a B-double at the intersection of the Sturt Highway and the Old Sturt Highway near Barmera on Tuesday night.

Her 12-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital to be assessed. The driver of the B-Double was not injured.

The intersection was closed for some time with diversions in place and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
