A teenage girl is fighting for life and her mother is in a critical condition following a head-on crash in northern NSW, which has closed the New England Highway.

The 13-year-old girl and her 43-year-old mother, along with two men, believed to be in their 60s or 70s, have been transferred to hospitals after their cars crashed on the highway on Monday about 10am.

The girl has extensive injuries and has been airlifted to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition, a spokesman from Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service said.

Traffic was still backed up on the New England Highway at 2.30pm with diversions in place for motorists.
