More Than 10,000 Homes Still Without Power As The Sydney Storm Clean-Up Continues

More than 10,000 Sydney homes and businesses are still without power following the wild storms that ripped through the city on Saturday.

Network operators Endeavour Energy and Ausgrid were working to repair electrical hazards before supply could be restored, with some homes expected to be without power into Monday.

Ausgrid says while power has been restored to 38,000 of its customers, many of the outstanding repairs were complex and taking longer than expected.

Sydney's north western suburbs were the hardest hit, particularly around the Cherrybrook, Pennant Hills, West Pennant Hills, Beecroft, Thornleigh, Dural, and Castle Hill areas.

"We understand the customer frustration at extended outages on the network," said Ausgrid's general manager asset management & operations Sam Sofi.

"We know it's tough to organise families, school and work with no power and we are trying hard to get power back to our customers as soon as possible."

Mr Sofi said Ausgrid crews needed to repair and rebuild parts of the network to make it safe before power could be restored.

Some of that work includes installing new power poles and restringing powerlines, he said.

Endeavour Energy spokesman said while power had been restored to 18,200 customers affected by the storms, another 6,800 properties were still without any supply.

Meanwhile, many traffic lights still remain out in many parts of Sydney's north west that were hit by the Saturday storms.

More than 55,000 properties in Sydney and on the Central Coast were without power after severe storms hit on Saturday afternoon.

Torrential rain, damaging wind and hailstones the size of golf balls lashed Sydney and the Hunter region, bringing down trees and taking out hundreds of power lines.

The SES received close to 7000 calls for help, mainly for fallen trees and roof damage.
