Passengers on board a Qantas flight out of Adelaide this morning have had a scare, mid-air.

Oxygen masks on flight QF 706 were deployed when the plane's cabin de-pressurised and started a steep descent.

Travellers headed to Canberra reported hearing a "loud bang".

The aircraft was diverted to Melbourne and landed safely around 8am, no one was hurt.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau says it's looking into the incident.
