In breaking news, Melbourne Zoo is in lockdown following the escape of an orangutan this afternoon.

Malu, the 16-year-old Sumatran orangutan, managed to get out of his enclosure just after 3pm.

This is not the first time Malu has staged an escape, with the zoo put in lockdown in 2015 involving the use of a blanket to get out of the cage.

Visitors of the zoo have been moved from the area.

More to come.
