Thirty children have been evacuated from a suburban Melbourne kindergarten where emergency services are looking for the source of a suspected gas leak.

The Country Fire Authority on Wednesday was called to an address at Mernda where crews smelled a strong odour of kerosene, a spokeswoman told AAP.

"Six to eight adults were also evacuated from a neighbouring community centre," she said.

The Vic Emergency website urges people to avoid the Mernda Drive area as efforts are made to stop the leak.
