A Maudsland man is due to face Southport Magistrates Court today after allegedly jumping off a bridge in an effort to evade police.

Police arrested the 29-year-old yesterday after a dramatic chase, charging him with several serious offences and outstanding warrants.

It is alleged officers spotted him speeding in a stolen Hyundai Santa Fe with fake NSW plates at Benowa around 11am on Monday.

That is when police deployed stingers on the Ross Street Bridge to stop the vehicle.

The drive is then accused of attempting to steal another car at knife point before jumping off the bridge into the Nerang River, where he was captured.

The man has been charged with attempted robbery, dangerous operation of a vehicle, driving a motor vehicle without a driver licence and two counts of obstruct police.

While he was also charged with one count of rape and one count of stealing in relation to an alleged incident at Ormeau Hills on May 5.
