A manhunt is still underway to locate the driver after a fatal hit and run in Carrum Downs on Tuesday morning.

Police say workers were setting out road markers near Lats Avenue around 7.15 am when a Holden commodore travelling at a high speed struck two traffic controllers.

The latest Melbourne news

A 44-year-old man died at the scene, and a second 38-year-old man was airlifted to hospital where he remains in a serious condition with life-threatening injuries.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Jarrod Dwyer said witnesses stepped in to save the second man.

“One was hit head-on and they were the one who suffered the fatal injuries, the second road worker was thrown to the side of the road, and one of the good samaritans dragged them to the side of the road.”

The driver crashed the car and fled on foot before calling someone who picked him up in a Hyundai SUV but not before a witness captured a photo of the accused man.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jarrod Dwyer said this was the act of a coward.

“These two people have just gone out to do their job, they’ve set up everything safely, they deserve to be out in a safe environment and it’s just disgraceful.”
