A man has had to be cut free from the wreckage of a crash on the M1 at Tweed Heads overnight.

The man in his mid-30s was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital after his ute crashed into a pole around 1:17am on Monday.

Emergency services arrived on scene shortly after and he was eventually freed from the wreckage more than two hours later.

He suffered a serious arm injury, as well as several injuries to his upper body and a possible head wound.
